Saku Koivu is my hero. He is a hero for any people who have to overcome the odds. Saku overcame non-Hodgkin's lymphoma during the 01-02 NHL season. After overcoming cancer, Saku is helping to raise money for a PET scan machine through the Saku Koivu foundation, for a Montreal hospital. Saku's story is an inspiration.
Saku Koivu overcame the disease, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, to play in the 01-02 NHL regular season. During a flight from Finland to Montreal, Saku felt some discomfort in his stomach. This condition continued all through the flight. When Saku got to Montreal, he went to see Montreal Canadiens team doctor David Mulder. Mulder diagnosed Saku with a stomach flu, but upon further tests he diagnosed Saku with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which is a type of cancer. This was the start of Saku’s battle with cancer.
After overcoming his serious disease, Saku Koivu is raising money for a PET scan, which is a machine that is vital in the early detection and treatment of cancer. He is raising money for the PET scan through the Saku Koivu foundation and the Pet scan will be placed in the Montreal Regional hospital. Saku Koivu is known as a big hero through Montreal for his money raising work.
Saku Koivu’s courageious battle with cancer is an inspiration to anyone who had to overcome the odds, because that’s exactly what he did. In 2001-2002 season, Saku made an announcement that shocked the hockey world. Saku announced that he would come out of rehab early and helped the Canadiens to a playoff spot. The next year, after his serious disease, Saku posted a career high 71 points.

In closing, Saku Koivu is a great hero for young people everywhere. He had to overcome cancer to play in the NHL, he is raising money for an important piece of cancer technology, his story is an inspiration to anyone. Saku’s story is known all through the hockey world.
