Sacagawea

by Mirella

Sacagawea is a very important hero. She is brave, puts others before herself, has perseverance and determination. According to funtrivia.com, in Hidatsa (the language of the tribe that kidnapped Sacagawea) Sacaga means bird, and wea means woman so Sacagawea means bird woman. When Sacagawea was just eleven years old, the Hidatsa riding party took her from her tribe. A little later she was sold into slavery with the Missouri River Madans. After a while she started helping with the Lewis and Clark expedition. Sacagawea was strong and full of courage.

Sacagawea was very brave. She helped the Lewis and Clark expedition to survive. She collected food for everybody so the people on the expedition could carry on. When a boat hit Sacagawea she still did her duties for others to be able to stay alive. While she was on the expedition, she had a baby to carry around so it made it even more difficult to help the expedition. Although there were obstacles in Sacagawea's way, she was still brave and got it done.

Sacagawea was also a determined person. She traveled thousands of miles with a newborn baby on her back. Even with a very high fever she still made sure she was helpful to Louis and Clark and her baby was fed. Sacagawea and her helpers traveled through many dangerous places but they did not even consider going back. Most of all, she wanted to survive the journey to see her people, the Shoshones tribe.

Sacagawea always thought about other people before herself. Sacagawea helped Lewis and Clark when she was approximately fifteen years old and six months pregnant. Sacagawea brought a lot of food and cooked. She helped the Louis and Clark expedition by speaking in other languages to get horses to make traveling easier. Sacagawea collected roots, berries, and lots of special plants that helped people get better when they got sick. Sacagawea saved important papers from the water. The notes contained Louis' and Clark's writings about animals and plants they discovered. Sacagawea's brave act was so important that the Sacagawea River was named after her. Sacagawea always puts others before herself and earned a huge respect from Louis and Clark.

Sacagawea was a brave person who became part of a great adventure. Sacagawea was also a kind and generous woman. She translated, took care of people and worked as a guide, making the Louis and Clark expedition possible. As a young mother she traveled through rivers and mountains, suffering from hunger, pain and danger, and doing that without complaining. Sacagawea was a true hero who put others before herself, was a brave and always a determined woman.
