Secretariat

When I think of speed, endurance, and perseverance I think of my hero, Secretariat. Secretariat was one of the best horses to ever race and he is most famous for winning the Triple Crown. He was a powerful race horse that proved that he could not only be fast, but he could run and last long distances, and he had the will to win. These qualities are why I chose my hero to be Secretariat from the animal category.

Secretariat was a thoroughbred racehorse that did what no horse had done for 25 years, he won the Triple Crown. This feat isn’t a common thing to happen. As a matter of fact, only 11 horses have accomplished this feat in the last 92 years. Many times a horse may win only 1 or 2 of the 3 races, if they win at all, but it very rare to win all three in a single racing season.

Secretariat was born on March 30, 1970 and grew to be 16’2 hands tall and weighed 1200 lbs. He only raced for two years, when he was 2 year old and 3 a year old. During his entire career he earned over 1.3 million dollars and won Horse of the Year in 1972 and 1973. In 1973 he won many races but was most famous for winning the Triple Crown. To win the Triple Crown, Secretariat had to win 3 major races: the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. He set new track records for the first 2 races, the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. He also set a world record for the last race, the Belmont Stakes.

When I first watched the movie “Secretariat”, I felt that this horse changed people’s lives by giving them hope that anything can happen. The success of Secretariat inspired me to want have similar qualities of perseverance and endurance as part of my life. Perseverance can help me in school. If I fail on a project, I won’t just give up I will do the extra credit or do the assignment over again to get a better grade. Perseverance can also help my in sports. If I miss a shot in basketball I won’t be afraid to take another shot whether I make it or not, I will just keep trying an will eventually make the shot. Endurance can help my school work. If I find a subject hard to learn, I won’t give up, even if it is hard. I still have to do it so I have to keep working hard to learn. Endurance also helps me with sports. Even though I’m tired after practicing football, I will still do the best I can do and won’t give up until the whistle blows.

Perseverance and endurance will make me a stronger, better person. Secretariat had the winning qualities of a hero. I would like to bring these qualities into my life as in improving in school and conquering any obstacle I face. I think Secretariat had a big impact on me and I think he was a great horse.
