Dr. Seuss

by Jennifer from Inglewood

When people hear the word hero they think of someone famous. They think of superpowers, villains, big robots, ECT. People think they need to be put in television or magazines or be in a movie saving the world. Is that what really makes a hero? No, a hero can be anyone, anywhere, everywhere. We can even be heroes ourselves and we don't even know it. That's why I chose my hero Dr. Seuss; he didn't go around walking with a superpower costume saving the world. He didn't have any super powers whatsoever. But he had one special technique and that was inspiring children and will continue inspiring children with his writing and pictures. He helped children think reading was fun and now has a lot of children who want to start writing poems. He is an inspiration.

Dr. Seuss was born in Springfield, Massachusetts on March 2, 1904 and passed away September 24, 1991. He attended Dartmouth College with his graduating class of 1925. While he was in college he joined two Organizations. One was the social fraternity for male college students, and another was a college humor magazine. He was editor-in-chief before he got caught throwing a drinking party that had violated the college rules that had forced him to resign all his extracurricular activities. Seuss started using the pen name Seuss and his signed name Dr. Seuss showed up after he graduated.

Dr. Seuss later attended Lincoln College Oxford to get a PH.D literature. Seuss also met his future wife Helen Palmer and before he returned to the United States without earning his degree, they got married in the year 1927. He started submitting hilarious articles and illustrations to the Judge. He went to an ocean voyage trip to Europe and the rhythm of the ship's engine inspired him to do what he did, Make rhyming children books and the first books was To think I saw it on Mulberry street. Seuss started writing three more children's books before World War Two. When world war two began, Dr. Seuss turned to doing political cartoon drawings over 400 in almost two years. He inspired a lot of children to read and start rhyming and thanks to him, his books are one of a million other books that influences young ones to love reading and influences them to write.

There are many reasons why Dr. Seuss is my hero but one main reason why I chose him is because when I was younger, I never knew how to read and when people would read to me I was never entertained. But one day my cousin bought me the Dr. Seuss collection. She knew I didn't know how to read so she started helping me pronounce word by word. My first book was The Cat in the Hat and I started enjoying it when I was half way done and for it was actually the first book I read and I actually really liked. His books motivated me to read a lot in the future and thanks to his books it changed the way I think about them. He also changed the way I think about poems because I'm starting to write some which are in progress. His books were so creative, original, and very entertaining which a lot of children love about him. As well as parents because of all the work and improvement they have seen in their children.

So as you can see, Dr. Seuss is a hero. He didn't need to rescue anyone from any danger, but just grab reader's attention to his extraordinary, marvelous rhymes and illustrations. This is really important to children, they love his books, his writing, his characters which gives them a better picture to learning something new. Most of all his rhymes, thousands of young children would like to be a poet and write great books like him in their future. He might have not been a big helper to people who just see him as another regular writer, but to his fans, he's more than that, he's a role model! Thank you Dr. Seuss for inspiring children to read, and inspiring them with your way of writing.
