Shanes Inspiration

by Charlie from Los Angeles

I am doing my hero essay about a company that creates specially designed parks and play structures for autistic and handicapped children. They try their hardest to improve the lives of these less fortunate children who can't play on certain play structures because of their disabilities. For my hero essay I am going to write about a life changing company called Shane's Inspiration.

"Native New Yorkers Catherine Curry-Williams and Scott Williams came all the way to California to find one another in 1993. Married in 1996, they immediately set out to start a family." They were thrilled to learn that their first born would be a boy. Soon, they had their first son, Shane Alexander. He was 7 pounds of perfection, except that he could not move or breathe on his own. Diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a genetic disorder afflicting 1 in 10,000 children, Shane lived only two weeks. But in his short life, Shane inspired his parents, family, and friends to reach farther than they ever had before. The result, Shane's Inspiration, has changed his parents' lives forever. Shane's Inspiration was founded a few years later in 1998 by Catherine and Scott. This company has changed the lives of children with disabilities in Los Angeles and all around the world.

Shane's Inspiration has made a huge impact on my family's life by building and naming a park after my older brother, Aidan. Aidan was born on December 5, 1995 and was diagnosed with unknown neuromuscular disease that affected all of his muscles including his heart. He couldn't eat or drink on his own so the doctors gave him a feeding tube. He was a great, kind, loving kid who would always want to be with you and comfort you. God called Aidan up to heaven at the age of 5 because the doctors had no cure for his mysterious disease. Even though Aidan is no longer on this earth anymore, he is still in me and my family's heart.

Scott and Catherine are on-goingly moved and amazed by the amount of support that has taken their dream and made it a reality that continues to grow. They are deeply gratified to find their core belief "that every child deserves a chance to play" is embraced by so many, and has therefore improved the lives of thousands of children like Shane and my brother Aidan.
