Nina Simone & Beyonce

by Keniya from Sheridan Tech

Nina Simone's unique rough-edged voice became a signature of the civil rights movement, several of her works played roles in motivating people to follow Martin Luther King's ideal and rank as some of the most powerfully political songs ever written. Nina's way of thinking was through her music. She had a way of going into people's soul with a rich voice that reached places your true love couldn't even go. Nina Simone was much more than a "smoky-toned jazz and blues singer," as many writers have characterized her. Through her life and music she epitomized the essence of the black American -- and especially the black female -- experience. She participated in the movement of equality between black and white Americans. She teamed up with Dr. Martin Luther King and Malcolm x plus more to fight for equality.

Nina made huge impact in the music industry and equality for Black Americans. She opened doors for many African American artists like her to be able to make a huge difference. Her music also helped with reaching out to people and helping them understand the pain and feelings of those who suffered. She became aware and tired of racism at 12 years old when she gave a piano recital in a library where her parents had to stand in the back because they were black. This gave Nina that urge to do something about it in her on way and make an impact.

Beyonce was born on September 4, 19 in Houston Texas. First started her career as lead vocalist of the R&B group Destiny's Child. She also went on and acted in many films that made it big on screen. Beyonce is one of the world's most influential women, believe it or not. She is known to be a feminist and bases many of her songs off of the empowerment of women. Her messages of empowerment, commitment to her craft, and control over her image and performance are undeniable.

An example of Beyonce's feminism was her performance at the Sunday's Super Bowl. With its massive budget and Beyonce's overpowering stage presence, the show delivered. Along with her solo songs, the reunion of her original group, Destiny's Child, highlighted the progress she's made as an artist. The foregrounding of female musicians was incredible as a symbol of resistance against an industry where male musicians are still the norm. At the paean to male achievement that is the Super Bowl, it was impossible to see the performance and not feel Beyonce had somehow won the whole thing. Songs that showed her feminist support includes "independent women part 1", "Run the World (Girls)", "Survivor", "Flawless", etc. Her new Song "Formation" is Activism for African Americans, Women and LGBT People.

If given the opportunity, I will take the responsibility to further spread their message and continue their program of change. One of the many things that I will do is gather many women, despite race, and come up with an idea to create a beautiful album. I will name this Project Peace. This album would feature many of our world's unique artists. We will fight for things like equality and freedom for all. Another thing I would do to further their message is coming up with a television program that will talk about and help fight some our many problems. I decided this because people love television so in order to reach into them with target what they love the most. My whole movement would be Project Peace. Project Peace would have a major impact in the music, film, etc. Industry just like Nina Simone and Beyonce Knowles. Art now is a very unique way to get people to listen and make a change. In conclusion, these woman have fought for us all in a major way. I may not have the beautiful voice that they have but I do have the courage and endurance to fight for what I believe is right.
