Curtis Sliwa is the founder of the international group known as The Guardian Angels. The group is a safety patrol group comprised of volunteers that volunteer their time in their communities to help in any way they can.
Curtis Sliwa started the group in 1979 to clean up the community where he lived. He started the group while he was the night manager of a McDonald's in the Bronx, N.Y. With 12 of his friends, he started off cleaning up the neighborhood and getting rid of all of the eyesores in the community. Soon, Curtis wanted more, though: he started to patrol the subways, then known as the "Mugger's Express."
Curtis Sliwa currently lives in New York City which is the hub for all of the chapters of the Guardian Angels around the world. He travels throughout the world constantly starting up new chapters. He is currently in South Africa setting up a chapter there.
Curtis is still alive and influencing people every day of his life.
This person is important to a lot of people because of his influential speeches. What is more moving than his speaches, are his actions, though. He will do anything it takes to clean up a community. If it risks his livelihood or well-being he will glady do it for the community. Curtis Sliwa is unlike any other hero: he fights crime on and off the streets but is a role model for REAL LIFE!
