Gloria Steinem

by Shaatika from Raleigh

A hero to me is someone who stands up for what he/she wants in life, and is willing to take a challenge. A hero should be smart, brave and, most of all, a hero should NEVER give up.

Gloria Steinem was born 1934 March 25, in Toledo, Ohio. Gloria's childhood wasn't so easy because her father left their home in 1944. It only made her stronger, not weak. After her father left, Gloria attended school on an irregular basis. In Gloria's senior year of high school, she moved to Washington D.C. to live with her sister.

In 1951 Steinem completed high school. 1952 she enrolled in Smith College to begin writing political articles. In 1956, Steinem graduated magan cum laude from Smith College accepted a two-year fellowship to study in India. Gloria wrote the Thousand Indians, a guide book for the Indian Government in 1957. Gloria Steinem soon took her career to another level. She moved to the big city to enter a journalism career in New York City. She published her first article called the, "The Moral Disarmament of Betty Coed."

Steinem's journalism career wasn't just a career. Gloria used her journalism skills as power for women. She set an example for all women to never give up, that they can do whatever they want when they put their mind to it, and don't let anyone tell you different because you are a women. She was also a great model to follow for women because she gave most of her time to political organizations. She also participated in the founding of the Coalition of Labor Union Women, Voters for Choice, and Women Against Pornography.

Being the hero that she is, Steinem is still active in her pursuit of feminism at the age of 66. She is an inspiration for all people, not only for women but for anybody who wants to take charge of changing anything that they feel is unfair. She helped educate people about women's struggles. Gloria Steinem is an example of a hero for you.
