My hero is John Stockton. Not only is he the best point guard to play in the NBA, he was also a good person. He might not have won any championships but he led the Utah Jazz to the NBA playoffs in all of his 19 seasons that he was there. He knew he was a great player but he didn't go around and make sure everyone knew it. The only way he would show it was to bring it on every game that he played.
He started out his outstanding career at Gonzaga University. In his four years at Gonzaga he averaged a 59.1% field goal percentage and a 72.6% freethrow percentage. He averaged 58.7 rebounds and 335 points per season. After his four years at Gonzaga, he entered the NBA draft and was selected 16th by the Utah Jazz.
He had a great career in the NBA. Some of his career averages are: 52% field goal percentage, 83% freethrow percentage, 10.5 assists per game, 2.2 steals per game, and 13.1 points per game. I don't know about you, but I think those are some pretty good numbers. His career totals are 1,504 games played, 19,711 total points, 15,806 total assists, and 3,265 total steals.
He made many great accomplishments while in the NBA. He was on the All-NBA first team two times, the All-NBA second team six times, and the All-NBA third team three times. He was a ten-time NBA All-Star and was named co-MVP with Karl Malone in the 1993 All-Star Game. He was also a member of the dream team that won the gold medal in the 1992 Summer Olympics. Just looking at those numbers should make anyone think that he is one of the best in the game.
Along with all of those accomplishments, he also set a couple of records. He is the NBA's all-time leader in assists and steals. He tied the NBA playoffs single-game assist record of 24 assists in one game. He has the record for most seasons with the same franchise with his 19 years with the Jazz.
John Stockton is not the best all-around player, but he is the best point guard to ever play in the NBA. Just because he doesn't have a championship under his belt, that doesn't mean that he wasn't a great player.
