Tyra Banks

by Suzie from Glenbrook Middle School

“I'm competitive with myself. I always try to push past my own borders.” Tyra Banks

My hero is Tyra Banks. She is most famous for her modeling, and The Tyra Show that she stars in every week. I chose Tyra as my hero because she seems like a very strong, likeable, and entertaining person. She works to help people all around the world. You may see her on a billboard, magazine or even on the T.V because of her very widespread career.

Tyra helps people all around the world. She has done many things including teaming up with Rachel Ray and asking audiences to bring in canned goods for City Harvest, the city’s leading food-rescue organization. They have also secured 50,000 canned goods from Del Monte, and 8,000 pounds of fresh poultry for the needy. She is also a part of an organization called Yéle Haiti, which is a program that focuses on emergency relief, employment, and planting trees. Tyra cares for our world and is doing a great job trying to help out.

Tyra is all over the T.V. She is in two different shows: The Tyra Banks Show, and America’s Next Top Model. On her talk show, she helps people with all different sorts of issues each week. Some people come onto the show with fears or strange habits and Tyra helps them get over them. She also discusses questions about health and life. However, on her Next Top Model show she makes or breaks some girls modeling careers. Tyra is still one of the most watched and admired individuals in media today.

Tyra was a supermodel who had been the star woman of color on the runways for some years. Subtle racism existed within the industry. “It’s very sad that the fashion business and press can’t accept that there can be more than one reigning black supermodel.” This could inspire many other colored models, and hopefully the racism will end. During the period she worked in the modeling industry she had some horrible things said to her.

Everything that Tyra has done is very admirable. She is an outstanding person who is really dedicated to helping people less fortunate. I have no doubt in my mind that she is headed towards helping even more people in the future. As you can see from reading all of the above, she is truly a hero. The next time you see her on a commercial or poster remember all of the talented things she has done, and that’s why Tyra Banks is my hero.
