Thomas Edison

by Maggy from Leawood

Thomas Edison was born on February 11, 1847 in Milan Ohio. He was the youngest of seven siblings. His mother's name was Nancy, and his father's name was Samuel.  Thomas Edison went through many hardships, he became mostly deaf at a young age because of Scarlet Fever. He also suffered from ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) so he got pulled out of school at age twelve and was homeschooled by his mother, Nancy. He became interested in books at an early age and earned ten cents for every novel he finished. He got his first job when he was twelve.

Thomas Edison was very intelligent. It all started when he became fifteen. He was at the train station and saved a three-year-old boy from a train. The boy's dad was so grateful that he gave Thomas telegraph lessons; this is how Thomas Edison got interested in technology. Soon he had learned enough to be a telegraph operator. For five years, Edison traveled throughout the Midwest as a substitute telegrapher for people in the Civil War. In his spare time he studied and experimented with telegraph technology and became familiar with electrical science.

Thomas Edison was very hard working and dedicated. He has invented many things that changed the way of the world. He invented the phonograph, the transmitter for the telephone speaker. He also made the first industrial research lab. Thomas Edison's first successful testing of the first light bulb was October 22, 1879, then he went on to improve it and made a light bulb that can run for 1,200 hours.

Without Thomas Edison, the world would be very different, he changed the world with

his courage, intelligence, and hard work. He has changed America, and this is what makes him an American hero.
