Thomas Edison |
Thomas Edison was born in Milan, Ohio in 1847, and he died in 1931. Edison was the American inventor who made the first light bulb. He was also the inventor of the phonograph that could record a human’s voice. Edison invented the motion picture camera, as well as 1,093 other inventions. Edison was probably the world’s greatest inventor. He worked with a team on many of his inventions. The team included John Kreusi, who was born in Switzerland, and Charles Batchelor, who was an engineer born in England. More men joined the team to work together through many nights. Sometimes they worked for ten days inventing inventions. Other times, they worked up to six months. They also improved inventions to make better ones. Alexander Graham Bell made the telephone but it could only work a few miles away. Western Union then asked Edison to improve Bell. Edison and his team made 2,000 experiments with the telephone. Edison was almost deaf and attached the magnet to the wire to let the sound waves travel through the jaw into his inner ear. It worked! Edison was happy that the telephone was working better. After that, he also made other better light bulbs.
Edison is a hero to people because he invented the light bulb. Without light bulbs our world will be dark. He also invented the phonograph and he made Alexander Graham Bell’s phone work better than it used to be. I chose Edison as my hero because to me he is an excellent role model. When I grow up I want to be just like him.
