The hero I chose was Terry Fox. I chose him because he has inspired many people to achieve their dreams and has raised millions of dollars for cancer research. The book is called Terry Fox; His story and is a biography that was published in 2000. The book takes place from Terry's school years to when he died. It was written by Leslie Scrivener. Fun facts about the author: she was born in Canada and is famous for Terry Fox; his story. She is also a writer for the Toronto Star.

Terry Fox was born in Winnipeg on July 28, 1958. He grew up in St.Johns, doing all of his schooling there. His parents are Rolly and Betty Fox. They were proud of their sons idea. They helped him through his tough times. His mom was quite strict but loved her kids. if Rolly was at work late, Betty would play sports in the backyard with her sons. Rolly was a serious man, but he wasn't too strict. Terry had an older brother named Fred, who was born in 1957. Terry was the second oldest child. his brother Darrell was born in 1962, followed 3 years later by Judith. He went to school in St. Johns, not finishing high school due to his surgeries and constant hospital trips. Terry loved sports growing up, playing baseball and other things with his parents and siblings. In high school he really wanted to play basketball, but he sucked. so he practiced for years and finally made it on to his high school basketball team. He wanted to play professionally, but his cancer got in the way.

Terry Fox faced a lot of challenges in his life. When he found out he had cancer, he had to stop playing basketball, and get his leg amputated. A few weeks after he got his prosthetic leg, he was trying to walk but it took him many weeks before he was able to walk. When he started his marathon of hope, it was hard for him because he ran from dawn to dusk. he was tired and his stump was swollen and sore. He was always tired. Sometime he felt like giving up, but he didn't want anyone to call him a quitter. He had to get over his pain and fears because of young kids who also have cancer and a lot of faith in him. His family and his friend Doug really encouraged him to keep running. Every night some family would give him hot food and a place to shower. When no one offered their home, he tried to sleep in their van, but a park ranger or policeman would offer him and Doug a motel room. The first quality i can think of for Terry Fox is Strong. He is strong because he ran as far across Canada as he could on one leg. The next one is Brave. It takes a really brave person to do that, because a lot of people said he wouldn't be able to do it, and he wanted to show them that he could do it. The last one is Optimistic. He was a very optimist person to believe that he could make it, especially after hearing all of the other failed attempts on 2 legs. Terry only had one leg, so that was a challenge. His stump hurt a lot and he was much slower from the prosthetic. When he found out he had cancer he and his family were very upset. He won 'Lou Marsh Trophy' in 1980, the 'Persons Of National Historic Significance' in 2008 and the 'Canadian Newsmaker Of The Year' in 1980-1981.

What I learnt from Terry Fox was that you can do anything, even if people tell you you can't do it. 3 questions i would ask him: What motivated you to keep running? Was anyone in your family not there for you? What was your reaction when you figured out you had lung cancer? I wouldn't want to be his child because he is so young and is also dead. I thought the book was good and really explained Terry's life in detail. I learnt to never give up and to chase my dreams. Also to help others even if it means you have to suffer. If you get bad news, you shouldn't dwell on it, you should do something. Others may like to read this to learn about him and his life. Also if they like biographies. They might not if they don't want to read about cancer or anything like that. I am happy that i chose this book because i have heard about him but not that much. He is definitely to be looked at as a hero. I am so glad i chose this book and subject.
