Thomas Jefferson

by Hailey from Lincoln

Have you ever researched Thomas Jefferson because to you he was a hero? Did you know his nickname was Red Fox? He was a great person, taking care of his children after his wife had died, having a job to do. I would think that it would be hard to be president of the United States and have to take care of six children.

Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13th, 1772 in Albemarle Country, Virginia. His Father's name was Peter Jefferson, he was a wealthy planter and a commander of Local Milita, a military force that is ready in any emergency possible. Thomas’s mother's name was Jane Thomas. She was a loving mother to all her children. She was loving to her family. Thomas had six sisters and one brother. Thomas went to the college of William And Mary. He liked paying his violin and he loved to dance. When he went to school to be with the law he had to go to a court to pass his grade in college. He was a very talented man because he could read seven languages by the time he was done with school and he studied for a total of seven years. In 1769 he took a seat in the House of Burgesses.

On January 1st, 1772 he got married to a lovely woman named Martha Skelton. Just so you know, Skelton was her maiden name. In the time Martha and Thomas had six children, sadly only two of them lived to be adults. Ten years after they got married Martha died and Thomas never remarried. He was very serious about education. He had seven thousand books and in 1819 he gave most of the books away. Later, the books that were left got burnt in a fire.

When he was hoping to be elected he was going against Aaron Burr. February 17, 1801 he was finally elected president. He was then the third president of the United States of America! When he was thirty-three he wrote the Declaration of Independence! At a time in his life he invented the modern fountain pen. He was president from 1801-1809. Later after being president he was elected governor of Virginia.

Thomas Jefferson was my hero because he wrote the Declaration of Independence! If he wouldn’t have written the Declaration of Independence it wouldn’t be the free world we have today. Thomas Jefferson was a great person and leader of our country. He was really hard working and a hero for having written the Declaration of Independence and he died on the fifth-tenth of the Declaration which was hours before his good friend John Adams. So you should probably agree that he was a hero. Thank you.
