What does being a hero mean to you? Well, to me it means anyone who somebody else can look up to. Someone who influences other people or leaves an imprint on them. My hero is Toby Keith. Keith is a famous country singer who has a more successful career than almost any other artist in any genre! A lot of people, or at least most fans, know him as “The Angry American.” Keith’s fierce pride in our country helped to earn this title.

Toby Keith’s given name is Toby Keith Covel. He was born July 8, 1961, in Clinton, Oklahoma. Keith’s father’s name is Hubert K. Covel Jr. and his mother’s name is Carolyn. Keith also has a brother and a sister. His brother’s name is Tracey and his sister’s name is Tonni. On March 24, 1984, Keith married his current wife, Tricia. He has one stepdaughter who is now 30 years old. Her name is Shelley. Keith also has a daughter who is 25 and a son who is 13. Their names are Krystal and Stelen.

Toby Keith is more than a country singer. He is also a songwriter, producer, and an actor. So far Keith is having a wonderful career, with 39 Top 20 songs and 22 number one hits! Even more, Keith is more than just a wonderful musician, he is also a huge American patriot and military supporter. My favorite quote of his is, “I don’t want to be labeled nothing but an American.” Keith has written many songs to show his support of our country. Some of them include, “American Soldier,” “Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue,” and “American Ride.” I think that Keith does a fantastic job at combining his passion of music and his passion for his country and its troops.

My hero has had to face hardships just as every other human being has. One hardship occurred in March of 2001, when his father died. His father was killed in a car accident because of the lack of two men who did not check to see if their company truck was running properly. Another hardship Keith has had to overcome was the death of a dear friend, Wayman Tisdale, an NBA and jazz bass guitar player. In March of 2009 Wayman died after fighting osteosarcoma (knee cancer) for two years. This sad event influenced Keith to write “Cryin’ for Me,” also known as “Wayman’s Song,” which has since become a popular song. These are just a few hardships that had to be overcome by my hero though there are still many more.

Toby Keith is my hero for many reasons. For one, I love his music and his movies. Second, I think it is great that he shows his support of America and dedication to our troops. He does many shows just for our troops to show them his appreciation and support. The Military Officers Association recently gave Keith the Distinguished Service Award. To me, Keith is a wonderful musician, a patriot, but is also more. He is a role model, and maybe people will look at him and want to do as he does, maybe they can learn from his choices. In my eyes, this is what makes Toby Keith my hero.
