A young man goes from being a normal kid in high school to a famous baseball player to a soldier fighting in The World War II to protect his country. Before fighting in the war, Ted Williams played for the Boston Red Sox. Williams played baseball from 1939 to 1960. He was born on August 30, 1918 and he died on July 5, 2002. He inspires people through his actions. Williams is a brave and selfless man who put his Country before himself and fought for the United States of America. Ted Williams deserves the title, "hero" because not only is he a baseball hero, but a war hero as well. He knew that by leaving his career to fight in the war, there was a chance of him not surviving and he was prepared for that. With all his hard work and determination, he got to where he was and everyone, including himself, was proud of it.
Ever since High School, Ted Williams was an incredible baseball player. Williams is originally from San Diego and went to Hoover High School where he played baseball. As a junior, he hit a .583, which was very impressive. "In '35, the Yankee's Bill Essick, offered Ted $200 a month to sign." As tempting as this may have been for him, he declined the offer and finished out his high school education. Boston Red Sox general manager made a scouting trip to San Diego, Williams caught his eye. He began his Red Sox career in 1939. Out of the 19 years in the major leagues, Williams had 521 home runs, he was a two time MVP, He was an all star 17 times, and he was the last person to ever have a 400 batting average. Ted Williams achieved the unachievable.
Williams was much more than just a baseball player, He was a war hero! When the United States got involved in the World War II, every man well enough to fight, was required to serve in the war. In January 1942, He was told he would be called to duty at any time. In November 1942, he got that call. The new soldiers had hard work in store for them. "At Amherst, physical training was rigorous." Williams was a pilot and flew the F4U Corsair airplane. He received a total of ten awards and three honors during his time in the military." It was in Honolulu where he finally received his orders to return home."
Williams accomplished so much in his life time. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966. His hometown of San Diego was proud to name a free way after Williams. No accomplishment was easy, Williams was hardworking and deserved every honor and award he ever got. Many people think of Williams as a hero for being a professional baseball player! The fact of the matter is that Ted Williams was more than just a baseball hero, he was a Man that was convicted to serve his Country with the same intensity as he did playing baseball.
