Torii Hunter – Personal Career Hero "I'd rather save a home run than hit one. I've always been like that. Defense is what I pride myself on."

I first became aware of Torii Hunter a few years ago when I was watching a baseball game on television. Torii hit two homeruns and made incredible defensive plays in centerfield. He made many diving catches and even robbed homeruns by jumping up and leaning over the fence to catch the balls. Torii is a very good baseball player and strives to do his best at everything he does. After watching him play, I started to do everything he would do; the way he batted, the way he fielded, and even the way he acted about baseball. I started to act and feel very confident when I played, to be just like Torii. That is why Torii Hunter is my Hero and why I love to watch him play.

Torii Hunter is a baseball player and he plays baseball for the Los Angeles Angels. He plays in centerfield and is a very good player. "I'd rather save a home run than hit one. I've always been like that. Defense is what I pride myself on." (Baseball Quotes- Hunter 1) This is a good quote to describe Torii Hunter because he plays very defensively and helps his team win both defensively and offensively. Torii was a very good player in high school so he never went to college. He got drafted onto his first team, the Twins, straight out of high school. His salary is $18,000,000 a year while he plays for the Angels. Torii trains mostly every day to stay up to his potential when he plays. He is very perseverant, which makes him the player that he is.

Torii began to develop as a player at a young age when “he and his three brothers (Taru, Tishque, and Tramar) all played baseball, and he first began to develop his fielder's legs by chasing down baseballs and footballs thrown by his brothers.” (Answers.com 1) Torii participated in baseball and football at his high school. He was a star football player and was also good at baseball. He got noticed by scouts while playing baseball in high school and soon got drafted onto the twins for baseball. Since Torii got drafted out of high school he never went to college.

Torii contributes his time by playing baseball and by helping kids. Torii started a program called Education Initiative. This program gives kids the chance to get a good college education and building their character. Torii started this program for one main reason. He said, “The way I grew up was pretty tough, I vowed to myself, that if I ever got the opportunity to help anybody that I was going to do it. That's one of the reasons why I'm so passionate about helping kids.” (Hunter 1) Torii is very dedicated to his job and likes helping others in his spare time. This is another reason he is my hero.

I want to strive to be like Torii in many ways. I would love to play major league baseball and be dedicated to my job and the sport I like. I don’t think I have a good chance to make it into the majors like Torii but I think it would be cool to still be involved in it. Perhaps becoming an announcer for the Angels. Even if that doesn’t work out I want to have a job where I can do something for others and dedicate time to others, like Torii. I want people to look up to me like they look up to Torii because that would be pretty cool. My lifetime goal is to set up a program similar to Torii’s. I love helping kids, and giving them better education and character is a once in a lifetime thing. That is why Torii Hunter is my Personal Career Hero.
