DiverseCity CD cover |
A hero to me is someone who can use music and popularity to glorify God and to put down racial differences. The person I believe that is this type of hero to me is TobyMac. His music brings inspiration to all people and at the same time is showing glory to God and not to himself.
Toby McKeehan (birth name Kevin Michael McKeehan) was born on October 22, 1964 in Fairfox, Virginia. He is most known by his stage name TobyMac. He started his career with friends Michael Tait and Kevin Max Smith, and named their band DC Talk. The band lasted for 14 years and all started their own solo careers. Toby made his first CD Momentum with his band Diverse City. He has produced 4 other CDs since then and he is releasing a new Christmas CD late October. He has been nominated for the Grammy’s and Dove Awards. He won Dove Awards for album of the year, best song, best music video, and artist of the year. He finally won a Grammy in 2009 for best Rock/Rap Gospel Album. He has written books and this year he gets the chance to become an actor in the movie I’m In Love With a Church Girl.
Toby was married in 1994 to Amanda Levy. They have 3 children named Truett, Leo, and Judah. They also adopted twins named Moses and Marlee. Some of Toby’s music comes from his wife’s Jamaican culture. Toby has allowed some of his children (Judah and Truett- aka TruDog) to sing with him.
Toby has helped do things that touch everyone’s lives. Toby has established a camp to help children learn how to play instruments. He bases his music on problems in his life, on racial problems between groups of people, and all lead up to God being the savior and healer in all problems in our daily lives. His music points to God in a glorifying and honoring way that all people like to hear from a Christian singer. That is why TobyMac is my hero.
