William B. Travis

by Sam from Colorado City

1. A hero shows courage.

2. A hero will die for what he believes in.

3. Most of the time a hero doesn’t try to be a hero.

4. They are natural born leaders.

5. A hero is very dedicated and never quits trying.

Someone I think is a hero is William B. Travis. He is a historical figure and was a leader at the Alamo. He was the leader of the regular army at the Alamo. He fought and died for Texas independence when he was only 27 years old. He also kept sending letters asking for reinforcements even though none came. Travis and his men were greatly outnumbered, but they kept fighting. He refused to surrender the Alamo even if this meant he would be killed.

I think Travis was a hero because he had all the qualities that I think a hero should have. William B. Travis showed great courage at the “Battle of the Alamo.” He knew they were seriously outnumbered. He also knew that if he was not killed in battle and the Alamo was captured that he would be executed. These thoughts did not stop Travis from fighting off the Mexicans the best he and his men could. Also, because he showed such courage he gave the men around him hope.

Another reason I think that Travis was a hero was that he died for what he believed in. He wanted all of Texas to be free from the rule of the dictator, Santa Anna. I think even though Travis lost the battle and was killed he is still a hero. In fact, I think that because he died that makes him even more heroic.

Travis never tried to be a hero. He did not go into the battle just so people would think he was heroic. He went to the Alamo, fought, and died because he wanted freedom. Of course he did end up becoming a hero and a historical figure, but he did not know that this was going to happen.

He was elected leader because his men knew that he was special; that he was a natural born leader. He was very brave and strong. He was always out fighting right beside the other men at the Alamo. He also knew just what to say to raise the men’s spirits. Like when he drew a line in the sand and asked those who wanted to fight to cross the line. All but one of the men stood by their leader to the bitter end.

In addition to being all the things I have already listed, he was also very dedicated. He knew that he needed more men to fight Santa Anna so he sent out letters asking for reinforcements. None ever came but he would not give up. He kept writing the letters until the Alamo was breached and he was killed.

William B. Travis was a great leader who was very brave and strong under pressure. He fought and died so Texas could be free from Mexico and because he did I think that he is a hero not just in Texas but everywhere.
