A psycho man who cut off his ear for a girl. How could he be a hero? Just because they haven't saved a life or done something daring doesn't mean they aren't a hero. Vincent van Gogh was saving himself by pursuing in the arts. Also he dove into art even though no one liked the art he put out, he would rarely eat so he could afford paints. Vincent van Gogh isn't just another starving artist that cut off his ear, he is an artistic hero; this is because he is very hard working, self sacrificing, and though no one liked his art at the time he still to this day inspires from the grave.
Vincent van Gogh is self sacrificing because of the way he lived his life. He is known as a starting artist which contributes to being self sacrificing. When Vincent van Gogh moved into the "little yellow house" he spent his money on paint rather than food. He lived on coffee, bread, and absinthe, and found himself feeling sick and strange often (biography.com). He didn't care about the state it put himself in he just wanted to create art. He is an artist who sacrifices material well-being in order to focus on his artwork, typically live on minimum expenses, either for a lack of business or because all his disposable income goes toward art projects. Although his life wasn't the easiest he still managed to go to school when he was older to obtain a knowledge for the world of art. "Even the knowledge of my own fallibility cannot keep me from making mistakes. Only when I fall do I get up again." (Van Gogh). Vincent hit many bumps in the road with his paintings. Throughout his life when Vincent hit one of his low points he always got back up and tried a different style of art. Van Gogh's persistence with his artwork portrays the amount of drive he has and courage, even if something didn't work out he had the inspiration to keep moving forward.

Vincent van Gogh is also a very hard working artist. Vincent van Gogh was constantly moving around and getting new inspiration for his art, working at different museums and figuring out different styles of art (biography.com). This shows how he went out of his way to get taught art skills and new style. That's how he creating the amazing art now in famous museums. During Van Gogh's life, he demonstrates vast courage by pursuing his life goal of becoming a painter. An example of Vincent's courage was shown when he said the following quote, "As we advance in life it becomes more and more difficult, but in fighting the difficulties the inmost strength of the heart is developed." (Van Gogh). Through Vincent's actions of dedicating himself and his time to the Holy Father he showed courage by standing up for what he believed in and what he thought was right.
Even though he did not inspire people during his time, Vincent van Gogh now inspires many from the grave. Vincent Van Gogh is considered the greatest Dutch painter, completing over 2,100 works (biography.com). His work how all over, and is an inspiration to many beginner and even professional artist. This is because of the was he constantly made art not caring if it even would sell or not. He had great love for art, and wanted everyone to realize that. Vincent Van Gogh once said that "happiness... it lies in the joy of achievement, in the thrill of creative effort" (Van Gogh). He displays that to get to the point of happiness one must reach their goal, when that goal is reached happiness will follow. Showing how it didn't matter if he got money from his art. All Vincent cared about was the joy it gave him.
As you have just seen Vincent van Gogh isn't just another starving artist that cut off his ear. He is an artistic hero, not only because he is extremely hard working, self sacrificing, and a great inspiration but because her preserved through his depression and mental illnesses, still creating art.
