Vince Carter

by Dana from New Haven

Hmmm...its kind of hard to describe what a hero is. If someone asks me what a hero is, my answer will probably be different from yours or anybody else's. The definition of a hero, to me, is someone who influences other people in different aspects of life. Whether it relates to sports, or helping in the community, however it has to effect other people in a positive way. You have to be smart, as well as confident when you do something. Those are qualities that I believe make you a hero. Vince Carter, of the New Jersey Nets, is a prime example of a hero.

A hero is one of the many things you could call Vince Carter off the court, as well as on the court. Right now, we're only going to talk about what he does off the court. We could probably go on and on about the accomplishments he did, but there were some that stuck out the most. For example, he has plenty of endorsements like Nike, T-Mobile, and Gatorade. That's just the beginning of the plan. He uses that money to donate it to create and improve other organization like a rehab shelter for alcoholics and drug-users called, The Vince Carter Sanctuary. Plus he and his mom donated $1.6 million to the Stewart Marchman Foundation and $2.5 million to the Vince Carter Athletic Center. That's just the beginning of the many achievements he accomplished.

Now when we talk about on the court, this paragraph could continue for years because he is one of the NBA's best players in league history, not only for his eye popping plays, but for his outstanding athleticism. He received a lot of awards in the NBA, but in basketball before the NBA, he was even more outstanding because he was tearing up opposing players. He got awards like Rookie of the Year, Sportsman of the Year, Slam Dunk Champion of 2000. Vince also was leading the All Star votes in 2005. His average of all his games is 23.6 points per game. He did plenty of things in the NBA. He is one of the most outstanding players in the NBA, and probably the most underrated.

These are the reasons why Vince Carter is a hero, or at least in my eyes. He has done plenty in the community to help others, as well as he does excellent on the court. You don't have to like him, but you have to respect the efforts he has contributed to all people in life.
