Mike Dwayne Vick was born on June 26 1980 in Newport News, Virginia, a.k.a Badnews. Growing up in Newport News was tough for Mike, as it was for most kids his age but his mother, Brenda, was a very positive influence in his life, and in his younger brother Marcus's. In middle school one of Michael’s teachers suggested to Mike’s mother that putting Mike in a team sport would help to keep him out of trouble. Michael tried football and was quick to figure out that he was a natural. With his speed, crazy moves and strong left arm, Mike was nearly unstoppable.

I’m going to be honest. Mike Vick isn’t my hero because of his charity work, which is outstanding by the way. It’s because of his outstanding football skills. Vick first began to get noticed professionally in high school. In his freshman year Vick threw for over 400 yards in a game. If you’re not familiar with football I’ll tell you right now that to accomplish that kind of goal is incredible. In his three year high school career Vick threw for 4,846 yards. He had 43 touchdowns in the air as well. He also put in 1,048 rushing yards and 18 rushing touchdowns. In college Vick played for the division 1 team Virginia Tech Hokies. He had an outstanding 2 year career with VT. He won awards set records and stunned everyone with his unbelievable skills. In his freshman year he finished third in voting for the Heisman trophy, something never before achieved by a freshman.

In 2001 Michael Vick was the first African-American QB to be picked first overall in the NFL draft. He was chosen by the struggling Atlanta Falcons. In his first two years of pro football Mike Vick became a Superstar and led the Falcons to their first long playoff run in years, finally losing to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC championship game. Mike has done some amazing charity work. He and his brother Marcus (wide receiver for the Miami Dolphins) founded the non-profit Vick Foundation for under privileged children. It provides grants for non-profit organizations that provide quality after school care for children that have nowhere else to turn. Michael is also the spokesman for the boys and girls club of Atlanta. Michael and his brother Marcus do their charity work in order to help kids who were like them. Struggling and without very much money. “Now that we’re in a better position, we believe it’s our responsibility to give back and help kids who are in need.” Said Marcus. The Falcons have a new coach this year, I hope he does a good job and that the Falcons have a great ’07/’08 season!
