Whitney Houston

by Raven from North Carolina

A hero to me is anyone who can dig themselves out of the deepest of ditches, climb the highest of mountains, can overcome the toughest of trials, and still have the power to inspire others. My idea of a hero is not someone who goes around “saving the day” or “fighting crime”. After all that’s what we have police for. A hero should be more of a role-model, someone who has been through the worst of situations and still managed to come out with their head held up high.

Whitney Houston endured a marriage with a drug abusive husband that introduced her to a life of cocaine abuse. This double platinum singer-actress went from the spotlight to a world of darkness in a matter of years. Suspicions of her drug abuse began when there were repeated cancellations of public appearances and reports of erratic behavior. Publicity also began to focus on her massive amount of weight loss throughout such a short period of time. Her marriage and personal life became a main subject of controversy, giving Whitney a terrible reputation. Drugs and her unstable marriage were bringing her life and career down.

But just like the hero that she is, she overcame it all. She didn’t let her problems keep her down long. Whitney enrolled herself into a rehabilitation center on March 24, 2005. She was said to have been drug-free every since leaving the program. Also to better herself, she filed for a legal separation from husband Bobby Brown, which later led to her divorce.

Whitney Houston’s debut album “Whitney Houston” yielded three number one singles in 1985. Those hit singles consisted of “Greatest Love of All”, “Saving all my Love For You”, and “How Will I Know”. She didn’t stop there. In 1987 she made four more hit singles. In 1992 she did her first motion-picture debut in “The Bodyguard” which remained number one for fourteen weeks. In the mid 90’s she continued acting and appeared in more films such as “Waiting to Exhale”, and “The Preachers Wife”. Whitney has currently reunited with her former mentor/producer Clive Davis to begin working on her seventh studio album. This will be the first major event on her clean slate.

Whitney has proven to the public, all of her critics, and myself that she is in fact a hero. To all the people that thought she was going to stay down in the dumps and let her issues keep her bound, she has proven them wrong. She took all of the negatives in her life and turned them into positives. For that I crown her MY HERO!
