Wilma Joines

by Stephanie from Kentucky

My grandma is a hero to me very much. Her name is Wilma Joines. She has gray hair, over weight, and has wrinkles on her face. She was a strong minded, honest, and brave person. She took a lot out of people and did not care what they thought, just what she thought. She would write letters to people that needed one. This card could be for birthday, anniversaries, sickness, and just special occasions. She would never forget a special occasion whether it be for someone she loved or just someone she knew.

When she was little, she was raised in a poor family, so she knew she could not have anything really nice. She accepted that and took whatever she could have. She was a little over weight and had diabetes. She had to take a shot everyday, before she ate or after. She only had one daughter, which is my mom. Her name is Denise Mitchell. She took care of my grandma when she was sick. My mom was very strong when she had to take care of her. It was a lot of work keeping up with her medicine and just taking care of her period. I really admire her for that.

She was a strong Christian women and hardly ever missed a sermon of church. She went to church anytime that she could. Her husband, Curtis Joines, was an elder of the church, so that made her even stronger. My grandparents were very strong, they never did anything bad that I know of. They would watch me and my sister when we were little so we would not have to have a babysitter. It was so fun being with them. They would give us coffee and that was great. I think they were both heroes watching us, so we would not have someone we didn’t know watching us. They helped anyone out that needed it. They also gave money frequently to the church and donations to various places. They also kept up with any news of the members. If they had surgery or illnesses, they would know and would be wherever the member is at. They showed that they cared to every member in the church.

My grandma struggled through congestive heart failure. She didn't want to die; she knew everyone would miss her. She has been through a lot of heart surgeries. She had heart attacks and strokes. I believe she was the strongest woman I know. I really didn’t think she was going to die. She made the hospital staff save her numerous times. Her body was so strong. I’m hoping I will be like her and not let my body go soon. I really admire her for being so strong because it’s not that easy to do that. She started getting sick again around January, I knew she wasn’t going to make it, her heart was slowly going down and she requested to go off all her medicine. Her kidneys shut down and soon after that she passed away. She died last year on January 22, 2007. It was a very sad day, but I know I will see her one day up in heaven. I love her so much. She will be my hero forever and ever.
