My hero’s name is Anthony Webb AKA Spud Webb. Spud Webb got his nickname from his grandmother, who called him Spartacus, and then changed to Spud. Spud was born on July 13, 1963 in Dallas, Texas.

Spud didn’t make his high school basketball team as a junior because he was to short, then Spud thought about quitting but instead he worked way harder. The summer coming into his senior year he learned how to dunk. Spud Webb’s recorded vertical is 45 inches high. Spud’s senior year he got to finally play and he scored 20 point and had 7 assists, from that day Anthony “Spud” Webb was a starter for the Wilmer-Hutchins High School varsity team. At the end of the season Spud was averaging 26 points a game, 6 assists and was the player of the year and a part of the all-state team. No universities would take Spud Webb because he was too short so he went to Midland Junior College where he led his team to a junior College national title in 1982.

After Spud’s title, North Carolina State offered him a full scholarship. Spud Webb led North Carolina State to the NCAA sweet 16. Then the Detroit Pistons drafted Spud Webb in the 4th round. That day Spud Webb was recorded as the 2nd shortest player in the NBA. He was traded to the Atlanta Hawks, where he did well, averaging 10 points and 4 assists a game, but when he got traded to the Sacramento Kings, that is when he got red hot, averaging 16 points and 8 assists a game.
In 1995 Spud Webb won the Slam-dunk competition, becoming the shortest player ever to win. Then he retired in 1998 with the Orlando Magic. Spud Webb is now a full time Dad and an NBA slam-dunk judge.
