Yogi Berra

by Roy from Fresno

My hero I picked was Yogi Berra. The reason I picked yogi Berra was because he was a kind and considerate guy that cares about other people. Yogi Berra was born in May 12, 1925 in St Louis, Missouri where he grew up. Yogi Berra's parents names were Paolina and Pietro Berra. Lawrence Peter Berra was named Yogi by one of his childhood friends. Yogi dropped out of middle school so he could try to help and support his family. Yogi had three older brothers that he loved to play sports with, he also had a younger sister. When Yogi became a teen he played in the minor leagues. His friend that lived by him was a manager that offered him a lot of money to play for the Cardinals but the one thing Yogi did was turn him down. Yogi joined the navy during World War Two. Soon Yogi was discovered by the New York Yankees. He spent his career playing for the Yankees and he has never been struck out in a game. Some people thought that Yogi was the greatest catcher ever.

Yogi Berra started playing for the Yankees in 1946. Three years later Yogi married his wife Carmen Berra. Yogi and Carmen had three boys together. Their names were Dale, Tim, and Larry Berra. Yogi's son Dale played for the New York Yankees, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Houston Astros. Yogi Berra's other son Tim played for the New York Jets. Yogi Berra was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame in 2007, and has a grand daughter that is a writer for ESPN. His parents were Italian immigrants which makes Yogi of Italian descent. So Yogi Berra was known as the greatest baseball player in history.
