Today's young men are following the wrong role models. Many young men want to look toward their father as a role model in their life, but a plague haunting millions of children in the United States is becoming more and more common in our society: over 40% of the children in the U.S. do not live with their father. Many people choose their heroes based on athletic ability and accomplishments only. I chose my hero, Shaun Alexander, not only for his great football career, but mainly for his faith, great attitude, and love for his community.
Shaun’s family began going to church around his 10th birthday. He has been a deeply spiritual person ever since. Many of his opponents don’t know what to think of him because the harder they tackle him the wider his smile gets. His faith also helps him persevere through the many tough trials of being a star player in the NFL.

Shaun met Valerie in mid 1999 and they immediately fell in love. They later got married in April of 2002. He had his priorities in line because he missed a very important game for the birth of his baby girl, Heaven.
Shaun Alexander is an amazing football player. He has broken many records and has no doubt amassed a large amount of wealth. Unlike other athletes, he found a great way to help the communities of the U.S. using that wealth. He set up the Shaun Alexander Foundation to help young men have good leadership skills, good character, and good role models to look up to
NFL football continues to produce many heroes of the athletic sort; the players use the football field to promote themselves. Very few use the sport as a way to serve others and make a difference in people’s lives. Shaun Alexander continues to play football and be a hero to many people including me.
