In this art piece, I drew Anna May Wong. What I found inspirational about Anna May Wong is her determination of making Asians not being portrayed stereotypically in movies. Without Anna May Wong, the way Asians being portrayed in the media would have stayed stereotypical.
A quote I like from Anna May Mong is “Why is it that the screen Chinese is nearly always the villain of the piece?” I like the quote because it shows how Chinese people were portrayed in cinema back then and you can sense the confusion Anna May Wong had to go through in Hollywood.
When Anna May Wong had to play stereotypical roles of Asian people, Anna May Wong would usually challenge those stereotypical roles, which helped develop better written Asian representation of roles in the future. In the art piece, I drew Anna May Wong’s quarter, which can show how impactful she was and an old styled film camera to represent that she impacted a part of Hollywood.
Anna May Wong's actions would influence my actions in the future because I learned from her story that speaking up and challenging what's wrong can make something better in the future.
I hope this artwork can let more people know about Anna May Wong's actions and her influence on Hollywood.
