by Drue from Cedar Grove, New Jersey

According to the Intermediate Dictionary “a hero is a person of distinguished courage or ability admired for brave deeds and noble qualities.” A hero has many qualities, like fearlessness, bravery, and selflessness. Lots of people have heroes in their lives, like firemen, policemen, and doctors. My hero is Yogi Berra. Yogi Berra is from the United States and is considered a sports hero.

Yogi Berra was born in 1925 in St. Louis, Missouri. Yogi was very interested in baseball all his life. When he got older, he joined the navy at 18. Yogi Berra was in the navy during World War II. He was only in the navy for one year, and then he started to play baseball. Yogi Berra played for the New York Yankees.

Yogi Berra has many accomplishments in his life. After a successful career in baseball, he was named manager of the New York Yankees and won the AL pennant in 1964. He later became the Mets manager in 1972, and in 1975 returned as the New York Yankees’ manager. Yogi was one of the few managers to win pennants in both the American and National Leagues. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972.

Yogi Berra has many qualities of a hero. He is humble, a role model, and positive. Yogi is humble because when he had the best record he didn’t brag about himself. He just was very happy to have done his best. Yogi is a role model because people look up to him because he worked hard. Another quality of Yogi is positiveness, because whenever he played, he believed he could win. That’s what makes Yogi a great hero.

In conclusion, a hero is willing to be fearless, brave, and selfless. They have to face their fears and help other people make their life easier. Yogi Berra is a sport’s hero from the United States. Yogi Berra has inspired me.
