George Washington Carver

by Billy from Cincinnati

Did you know that George Washington Carver was the man who invented peanut butter, and more than 100 different types of inventions with a peanut? George Washington Carver was a hero for all time because he was famous to people back in the day and since he was black it would have been a lot harder for people to be interested in his work. My hero lived in Missouri. My hero lived around 1890’s. This hero made a difference because we wouldn’t ever know what peanut butter is or all the other things he has made with the peanut.

George Washington Carver was born on a farm in Missouri. He received a B.S. from the college Iowa in 1894 and a M.S. in 1896. He made 325 different products from peanuts, and 75 products from pecans he made 118 products, including 500 dyes from 28 different plants. He invented it in 1927 for producing paints and stains from soybeans.

He got the Spin Garn Medal in 1923, which is given every year. The Spin Garn Medal is awarded to the African American person who has made the greatest contribution of his race. Carver died of anemia on January 5, 1943 and was buried beside Booker T. Washington. In 1943 a national monument was dedicated to his accomplishments.

Some slave owners didn’t want there slaves to know the landowner who purchased a thirteen year old girl named Mary in 1855 and his wife, Susan. Although the only child whose birth date can be defiantly established was Jim Carver in 1883 there are some uncertain references to twin girls who died in childhood. Moses Carver provided a tombstone for Jim Carver with a birth date of October 10, 1859.

George Washington Carver became a hero. He was "pirated by many diverse groups as a symbol of myriad causes." To people who were concerned about racism they didn't like that Carver was a hero to most people. I think George will be remembered for all time.
