I’m going to tell you about a Spanish hero who tried to find the "Seven Cities of Gold" in the New World—the U.S and Mexico. His name was Francisco Vasquez de Coronado and he is a hero because of his life, his expedition, and how other people respected him.
He was born in Salamanca, Spain, in 1510. During his time, the Spanish people knew that the New World had gold, silver, and other treasures. Francisco Vasquez de Corondo was the first one of the fortune seekers in Texas. At the age of 25,he sailed to the New World and lived in Mexico City. There he got married, started a family, and was made governor of the Province of Nueva Galicia in 1538.Coronado was made captain of the expedition to find the "Seven Cities of Gold."
The expedition left with 1,000 men from Mexico in 1540. Coronado went through the coast of the Sea of Cortez north to the Sonora. The mission was unsuccessful.
Although Coronado's expedition failed, he inspired other people to look for gold. This expedition created tales of gold mines and treasure in Texas. Other legends inspired people to come to the new land. In the 19th century, Jim Bowie tried to find some of some of the treasure.
Even though Francisco Vasquez de Coronado didn't find the legendary gold, he is still a hero because of all the things he did.
