Dominik Hasek

by Anthony , Master's Academy, Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Here are the traits I think a Hero should have. 1) A hero is someone who helps me become who I want to be. 2) A hero overcomes problems such as injuries. 3) A hero uses their special gift to help others. 4) A hero is quick thinking and courageous. 5) A hero is highly respected and is not trying to be a hero.

The hero I have chosen to write about is Dominik Hasek. Hasek is said to be the best goalie of all time and he lives up to his reputation. My hero is a sports hero. I am now going to tell you about some of his accomplishments. Hasek has won five Vezina awards, two Hart trophies and two Lester Pearson awards (all hockey awards.) He has even eon an Olympic gold medal for the Czech Republic Team. He has had the leading save percentage 6 times! Hasek has even became the first person to achieve six shutouts in one month since 1928!

I am now going to tell you about why Hasek fits my Criteria for a hero. Dominik Hasek helps me become who I want to be. His determination encourages me to become a hockey player when I'm older. When things get tough, he doesn’t give up. Hasek overcomes problems. Lately Hasek is fighting a serious injury Most players when faced with a serious injury might have given up their career. The fact that Hasek doesn't give up shows great determination. Hasek has and is using his special gift to help his teams. Over the years that Hasek as been a goalie, he has helped his teams greatly obviously by stopping shots any way possible. Hasek is quick thinking and courageous. Dominik has to be quick thinking to be a good goalie. He's courageous because he moved from Czechoslovakia to USA and because he faces serious injuries. Dominik is highly respected and does not try to be a hero. He is respected for being the best goalie possible. He only trys to be a goalie not a hero.

Therefore, Hasek may not be a superhero, but he's my hero

Dominik Hasek was born on January the 29th 1965 in Pardubice, Czechoslovakia, which is now the Czech Republic. He was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 10th round (199th overall) of the 1983 NHL Entry Draft. He became a Buffalo Saber on August 7, 1992.

Extra Info

Height : 5'11". Weight : 168 lbs. Catches: Left. Style: Very unorthodox. Here is what someone said on http://www.cyberbeach.net/~guess/domik.htm: Nobody has worse technique nor better leg reflexes than Hasek. His foot speed is simply tremendous. He wanders and flops and sprawls. But he stops the puck. Usually what Hasek sees, he stops, and to him the puck seems to be moving more slowly than it does for other goalies. He watches it come off the shooter's stick into his glove or body, and he always seems in control, even while he looks to be flopping like a trout. He is adept at directing his rebounds away from onrushing attackers. He prefers to hold pucks for face-offs, and the Sabres have a decent corps of centres so that tactic works fine for his team. Hasek instructs his defensemen to get out of the way so he can see the puck, and they follow orders. Hasek learned to come out of his net a little bit more but he still doesn't cut down his angles well. He also has to work on his puckhandling. He has the single most bizarre habit of any NHL goalie we've seen in recent years. In scrambles around the net, he abandons his stick entirely and grabs the puck with his blocker hand. His work with the stick is brutal, which may be why he lets go of it so often.
