Daniel Ellsberg decided to expose the Pentagon Papers which helped end the Vietnam War.
The whistleblower who exposes corruption or lying in a corporation or government agency often assumes that the people in charge will want to know this hidden information. Unfortunately, that is usually not the case. Most powerful organizations try to punish the whistleblower for disloyalty to the organization, and bury the information. For several years Daniel Ellsberg tried to work within the system, the Congress and Defense Department, to alert them to the lies being told about the conduct of the Vietnam War. He got nowhere and while he got nowhere, thousands of Americans & Vietnamese were needlessly dying. That's when he decided to expose the Pentagon Papers. These disclosures helped end the Vietnam War. Daniel Ellsberg expected that he might spend the rest of his life in jail. He is a hero to the law and to democracy.
