Richard Dawkins wrote several books which attempted to explain evolution to the layperson who has not had full schooling in biology and genetics. The Blind Watchmaker and his other books are interesting reading and present good explanations of what we know about biological evolution.
It is my opinion that Richard Dawkins did a much better job of explaining evolution to non-scientists, than he did in exploring new avenues in the science of evolution. He has explored memetics (the evolution of ideas) and "selfish genes" (the idea that selection can act on individual genes as well as on whole organisms).
