Dolly Parton Leaves a Legacy of Music, Joy, and Giving Back

On August 25^th, 2026, Dolly Parton’s nephew and decade-long head of security Bryan Seaver released a video on social media announcing the passing of his aunt. In his statement, he said

Dolly also opened doors for generations of singers, songwriters, musicians and dreamers from every walk of life, and across every continent. By her example, we believed that anything was possible. She never saw a door she couldn't open, and the doors she opened made and changed history.[1]

Dolly Parton was a singer, songwriter, storyteller, philanthropist, and global icon. Having written over 3,000 songs, including hits like Jolene, 9 to 5, and I Will Always Love You, Parton will always be remembered as one of the greatest artists of all time. Parton released more than 50 studio albums, earning numerous awards, including multiple Grammys, a Lifetime Achievement Award, and inductions into the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Her impact, however, extended far beyond music. Throughout her life Parton was dedicated to countless causes including education, healthcare, disaster relief, and community well-being.

Parton was born in 1946 in Locust Ridge, a small, rural community in Tennessee near the Great Smokey Mountains. She was raised in a single room cabin along with her eleven siblings. Her father Robert Lee worked in the mountains as a sharecropper and managed his own tobacco farm in East Tennessee. He was a fiercely intelligent man with a great mind for business, but his lack of education meant that he never learned to read or write. In her Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy acceptance speech, Dolly shared

My father could not read and write, and I saw how crippling that could be. My dad was a very smart man. And I often wondered what he could have done had he been able to read and write.[2]

Inspired by her father, Parton launched herself into a decades-long philanthropic career which began in 1988 with the founding of the Dollywood Foundation. The Dollywood Foundation began as a local campaign to encourage children to stay in school; every seventh and eighth grader in the area who completed high school received $500 from the foundation. According to the organization, the initiative was successful, and the dropout rate declined from 35 percent to just 6 percent. Since 2000, the organization offered a $15,000 college scholarship to five high school seniors each year, awarded to those who “have a dream they wish to pursue and who can successfully communicate their plan and commitment to realize their dreams.”

Having had so much success with the Dollywood Foundation, Parton later established another initiative in the hopes to increase literacy rates called the The Imagination Library. The program provides free, high-quality books to children from birth to age five, aiming to foster a love of reading and improve literacy rates. Said Parton

When I was growing up in the hills of East Tennessee, I knew my dreams would come true. I know there are children in your community with their own dreams. They dream of becoming a doctor or an inventor or a minister. Who knows, maybe there is a little girl whose dream is to be a writer and singer. The seeds of these dreams are often found in books and the seeds you help plant in your community can grow across the world.

Initially a local effort, the program erupted and has distributed over 200 million books worldwide. The Imagination Library now operates in several countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, Ireland, and the United Kingdom, with a focus on ensuring children have access to books regardless of their family’s income.

Dolly Parton lived her life with grace, integrity, and purpose. The legacy she leaves behind is on of music, joy, and giving back to the global community. Bryan Seaver shared in his statement, “Our family and the team she has entrusted with her legacy will work diligently to ensure her spirit will live with us forever.”[3]

Born small with big dreams, Dolly Parton was a powerhouse and there is no doubt that her spirit will live on for generations to come.
