DOUBLE WINS FOR "WORDS HAVE POWER" AT MY HERO INTERNATIONAL FILM FEST
DECEMBER 20, 2019 - LAGUNA BEACH, CA - "Words Have Power,” is the BEST OF FEST Winner at the MY HERO International Film Festival. The short documentary tells the story of Jaysa, a 10-year-old activist from Connecticut, who noticed a high rate of asthma in her community. Upon discovering that the cause was a coal-fired power plant, she began speaking out and rallying support in her neighborhood. Eventually, her efforts resulted in the plant shutting down.
“Words Have Power” is one of several documentaries in the series, Young Voices for the Planet. The series was produced and directed by Lynn Cherry, co-founder of the non-profit Young Voices on Climate Change. Cherry is the creator of the popular children’s books: A River Ran Wild and The Great Kapok Tree. Each film in the series features young people speaking out in an effort to change society by inspiring their communities to reduce their carbon footprints.
"'Words have Power' is a wonderful film that highlights the remarkable youth activism of Jaysa Mellers," says Wendy Milette, director of the MY HERO International Film Festival. "Jaysa inspires youth across the globe to stand up for health and environmental issues in their own communities."
