Description

I still didn’t feel like I saw myself yet

My 5th grade friends really made me sweat

They held up a mirror to my strengths and flaws

Instead of ghosting me when I gave them pause

Because they had the courage to tell me when I was wrong

They helped me become kind and strong

This is an excerpt from “Evolution of a Girl,” a poem about what it means to grow older and wiser.

Lyrics

Evolution of a Girl

by Victoria Hsu, 13

When I was in 2nd grade, I was a little brat

I’d chase the 5th graders around the playground with a chair as a hat!

I made one friend, but she was very mean

So I decided to become someone who would make friends like a queen!

In 3rd grade, I became sweet and quiet

But boredom built up inside of me like a bland diet

I didn’t want to be a wallflower who always said, “yes.”

I wanted to have boundaries like a queen in chess!

I ran for class representative in 4th grade

I decided I no longer wanted to be afraid

Somehow I won and became as popular as pie

But then my family moved to America and I wanted to cry!

I had to start over making new friends

Thankfully this is not where the story ends

I still didn’t feel like I saw myself yet

My 5th grade friends really made me sweat

They held up a mirror to my strengths and flaws

Instead of ghosting me when I gave them pause

Because they had the courage to tell me when I was wrong

They helped me become kind and strong

In return, I encouraged them when they had doubts

I taught them it’s okay to fail and fall as it’s how we sprout

And so, in helping them, I found the joy of helping others

Luckily, this journey is fun and full of colors.

And so in 6th grade, I became a Better Me

That’s the fabulous girl you see

7th grade is now and scary I say,

But I learn more in my journey everyday
