Amelia Earhart
My hero is the aviator Amelia Earhart. Amelia Earhart was the very first woman to fly and circumnavigate across the Atlantic Ocean. She was also an accomplished women's activist. She was inspired to be a pilot at a very young age when her dad Samuel Earhart took her to see a performance pilot doing a show. After that, she earned her pilot's license in 1923 which was an impressive feat considering pilot licenses were fairly new. She was one of the first female aviators/pilots and faced sexism because of her profession. But she did not let sexism and misogyny stop her, instead of letting negative comments and insults bring her down she used her fame to inspire other women to pursue their own respective passions. I chose her as my hero because she is gutsy, smart and was a great women's rights activist. Several people in her life told her a woman can't fly, but she flew anyway. She inspired me to pursue my passions and not let anyone tell me what to do.
I painted Amelia Earhart at an upward angle to show how she was always chasing the sky. Instead of making the photo purely grayscale I added burnt sienna to represent the warmth she radiated as a person. I chose the title "Flying high!" not just because she is a pilot, but also because of her dreams being hard to reach but her reaching her dreams anyways. I also chose it because of her tragic disappearance after her attempt to fly over the Pacific Ocean. I just know that wherever her soul rests she is still flying high inspiring women around the world
