Edmonia Lewis was a 19th century Black female sculptor who overcame obstacles to pursue her art education and career. One of Lewis's most famous sculptures depicts two African Americans, a standing man and a kneeling woman, celebrating liberation as they hear the news of the Emancipation Proclamation. The chains that are on the man's wrists still remain but no longer restrain him, reflecting the way that African Americans were now legally free but still had many obstacles restraining them. There is a look of relief and hope on both of their faces.
