MY HERO recommends this book to readers of all age groups.

From the Publisher
Hailed by readers and critics across the country, this engrossing biography of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo reveals a woman of extreme magnetism and originality, an artist whose sensual vibrancy came straight from her own experiences: her childhood near Mexico City during the Mexican Revolution; a devastating accident at age eighteen that left her crippled and unable to bear children; her tempestuous marriage to muralist Diego Rivera and intermittent love affairs with men as diverse as Isamu Noguchi and Leon Trotsky; her association with the Communist Party; her absorption in Mexican folklore and culture; and her dramatic love of spectacle.

Here is the tumultuous life of an extraordinary twentieth-century woman — with illustrations as rich and haunting as her legend.

how is she the revolutionary artist

Frida Kahlo claimed to have been born in 1910, the year of the outbreak of the Mexican Revolution. Both she and her paintings were intertwined with the political chaos and rebirth of her beloved Mexico.  She was an unconventional woman whose paintings were, in her words, "the frankest expression of herself." I would love to know the name of the self portrait at the beginning of the biography on this site. It does not seem to be available in print or poster form as most others are. Of course it is my favorite. Do you have any info on this, or can you tell me where I can get a copy?

Kahlo's Self-Portrait with Monkey appeared on the cover of the first edition of Hayden Herrera's book and was replaced with the current photograph of actress Salma Hayek.
