Hi my name is Arpun. My hero is Gandhi because he wanted political rights for India. He began to teach the policy of passive resistance and non-cooperation with the South African authorities. Gandhi acknowledged his debt to the teachings of Christ and to the 19th century. The inspiration for his policy came from the Russian writer, Leo Tolstoy, whose influence on Gandhi was profound. Gandhi is my hero because he fought for the rights of India using non-violence and passive resistance. He thought that Indians shouldn’t have been slaves just because they were different.

Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, which was located in a small state in western India. His name was Mahatma Karamchand Gandhi. Mahatma meant great soul and Gandhi meant grocer. At the age of six, Gandhi went to school at Porbandar, but he had difficulty multiplying. He was one of the sensitive types. When other boys made fun of him, he’d run home. Gandhi got married at the age of thirteen. It was an arranged marriage by his parents. He was married to a lovely girl named Kasturbai. They were the same age. His family was strictly vegetarian. Gandhi graduated from high school and enrolled in an Indian college, but he disliked it and went home after the first term. Gandhi died in 1948 when he was 79 years old. He was assassinated.
After his mother died, Gandhi thought he would build strength to fight for freedom. Gandhi wanted to fight for freedom because he did not like how the British treated the Indians. The British were controlling South Africa and they treated the Indians like slaves. Gandhi decided to help create peace for the world after seeing how his people and South Africans were abused and tortured.

Gandhi stayed in South Africa for 21 years to secure rights for the Indian people. Many times Gandhi was arrested by the British for his activities in South Africa and India. He spent seven years in jail for his political activities. But after Gandhi died, everybody started to stand up for their rights.
Again, I chose Gandhi because he stood up for what he believed in and he gave everybody else confidence. In my heart I think Gandhi is a true hero. He is my hero because he really believed in God. It’s like God sent him as his messenger to help us then and now.
