Harriet Tubman is a hero for many different reasons.  One reason is that she is brave, a leader, smart, and very selfless.  All of these are traits of a hero.

Harriet Tubman, also known as Minty and Moses, was born in Dorchester County, Maryland.  Because she was a slave, we are not sure whether she was born in 1820 or 1821. Can you imagine not knowing when a hero is born?  When Harriet was little she was taken away from her mother. As a result, Minty was determined to one day free her Mom. One major life changing event was when she got a horrible head injury.  This caused her to have blackouts for the rest of her life. Imagine what would have happened to all of the slaves she saved if she died that day. After over 20 years of working as a slave, Moses finally escaped to the north using the Underground Railroad.  Finally, the cause of her death was pneumonia, a very deadly disease.

One heroic thing that Harriet Tubman did was in 1850. When a law was passed that slave owners could go up to the north and take back their slaves, she joined the Underground Railroad.  While she was working for the Underground Railroad, she saved about 300 slaves. Another heroic thing that Minty did was during the Civil War she was a nurse and a spy. During the war she saved about 750 slaves.  Even after the war she remained a nurse and saved many more lives. Lastly, after slavery was abolished she was an equal rights spokesperson.

Now you know all about Harriet Tubman and her heroism.  I hope some of this information becomes useful someday. That is why I think that Harriet Tubman is a hero and a very important person.
