Early life

Harriet was born in Maryland, 1822. With the previous name, Araminta Ross, which her parents nicknamed her “Minty.” She grew up in a big house with 8 siblings and a mom and dad. She started work very early on. Her first job was at 5 years old and she had to take care of an infant. She was young and barely knew anything at the time. Once she turned 12, she was sentenced to work in the fields. One day while Harriet was out grocery shopping, a slave that had been confronted by his overseer, was trying to escape the store. Harriet stood in the way confused as the overseer picked up a heavy metal weight and aimed it at the slave, but unfortunately, it hit Harriet instead. She was carried home and laid on the seat of the loom, no medicine, no bed. For months she took to recover, once she got better and went back to work, she constantly was falling asleep and had many blackouts. Soon after she recovered she was sent out to the fields, and was separated from her family later on.

Rising

Harriet grew older and moved to Philadelphia to be free from slavery. But Harriet knew that there was still more to save. In Philadelphia, she met with William Still, the conductor of the Underground Railroad. Together they wanted to form a way to save the slaves without the government knowing. So in 1850, Harriet went back to Maryland to save her family and friends. It was successful! They got back safely and Harriet became a conductor on the UGRR. Soon she kept on going back and saving more and more. One of which was her husband, John. She even decided to go undercover as a spy in the union army during the civil war as a nurse. When her work was done, she met with her second husband, Nelson Davis. They went on freeing more and more people.
