How Should We Choose Our Heroes?

by Charles Harper, adapted for early readers by Naomi Gledhill from The My Hero Project

Human beings are special. We can speak, write, create art, invent things, and share our ideas with each other. Because of this, we also have a very important job: to look after the world and the beautiful creatures we share it with. It is our job to live with kindness, joy, peace, and love.

Heroes can help show us how to live by these good values. We need heroes. We need people who are kind, wise, and strong, that work hard to make the world a better place and show us how we can do the same.

The ancient Greeks said, “Tell me who you admire, and I’ll tell you who you are.” This means that the people we look up to—our heroes—can shape who we become. This is why it is so important that we choose the right people to look up to. If we follow the wrong kind of hero, it can hurt our world and the creatures in it. It can lead to more hate, greed, and fighting. This has happened before in history.

Some people we call heroes might not really be good role models. Sometimes, we confuse celebrities with heroes. Celebrities are people who are famous, but not always for doing good things. They don’t always show us good values.

But real heroes are different.

Real heroes don’t care about being rich or famous. They care about doing the right thing. They try to make the world better. They show love, kindness, patience, and honesty. They live with strong values and help others do the same.

Think about Superman. He saves people not because he wants fame or money, but because he wants to help. He even hides his real identity because it’s not about fame—it’s about doing good.

You might ask, “Where can we find real heroes?” Heroes are all around us. They can be your parents, your friends, your teachers, or even a stranger who helps you when you’re in trouble. Heroes can also be people from history or people who stand up for what is right, even when it’s hard for them to do it.

Our heroes should be kind and brave, and spread love, peace, and joy. If we choose our heroes wisely, we can become better people and help build a better world.
