My poem, "Inclusion At Woodstock" is about a trip that I took last summer with my friends at camp to the real fairgrounds in Bethel, NY where the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival took place. We got to see amazing performances from musicians with disabilities including a fun drum circle, a man without arms who played guitar with his legs, a blind singer who had the beautiful voice of an angel, and a powerhouse rock band.
A thousand voices rose beneath the warm sunshine,
Each note a thread that stitched the broken seams.
They came with shattered hopes and fragile dreams,
Yet found in music a way to have sometime.
The grass was holy ground, no walls, no name,
Where all people of different abilities could meet.
No gate kept out the weary or the sweet— They all belonged, and none were marked by shame.
A blind girl sang her heart out,
A man with no arms strummed his guitar.
A rock band had began to shout—
A world reborn with every musical note, Where voices blended—mine became your mine,
As we all danced underneath the bright sun.
