International Nurses Day

International Nurses Day is celebrated on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale. Florence was the founder of modern nursing. She embodied the character traits of selflessness and compassion which  make nurses heroes.

The theme for 2023 is “Our Nurses. Our Future.” Focusing on a "brighter" future of nursing and how the profession can help improve global health for all is the center of this year’s International Nurses Day.

Students from Pullman, Washington honor nurses during the coronavirus pandemic.

"Heesoo Kreps is my aunt. She is also a Registered Nurse in Ventura, California. She works in an emergency room at Community Memorial Hospital. She is my hero because she is on the frontline to help people with Covid-19. She has a young son and husband to take care of too. I love Heesoo because she has always played with me. She makes every day I ever spend with her fun. She makes the most amazing food, and I always enjoy eating it all. She always has a lot of cool stories to tell and is always so welcoming. I think she is probably the best nurse because she is really nice. I bet it is really hard for the patients to be away from their families, but I know that my aunt Heesoo is there to comfort them. But I also think it is probably really hard on my aunt to have to be strong for these patients. For all these reasons she is my hero."

Nevaeh Lacy

"We all know about how these doctors and nurses in the hospital have been taking care of patients with this Coronavirus situation. I personally just want to say thank you. Thank you for continuing to risk your lives every day to take care of us. I can't imagine how tired and sad you are to not be able to see your family, and always fearing to get the virus. You guys are the definition of the the phrase 'Not all heroes wear capes.' I just want to let you know that I believe in you and appreciate everything you do every single day!

Karli Johnston

"One of the many heroes in the coronavirus are nurses and doctors. These people are working countless hours to try to fight this virus. Some of them have not seen their families for weeks, some even months. As we sit at home, they are working hard to try to get down the number of people that have Covid-19.

Nurses are risking their lives just to keep others safe. Although they are being as safe as they can, they are still exposing themselves to the virus. Many people have died from the coronavirus, and doctors are right there with all the people who have been affected. They are trying to work as quickly as they can because they have to keep healing people until they are able to go home, so that they can bring more people into the hospital if they have the virus.

They are helping us so much in this scary time. Doctors and nurses are a essential part to get over this coronavirus; they are one of the many heroes in the coronavirus."

Molly Deen

"Imagine putting your life on the line every day to help others, working more than 12 hours and getting rashes from medical equipment such as masks. That's what healthcare professionals are doing every day to give us a healthy and coronavirus-free life. Healthcare professionals are working very hard to keep the coronavirus from spreading, find a vaccine for the virus, and keep the virus from getting to them and their families. Healthcare professionals are my coronavirus heroes by risking their lives to keep me from getting the virus."
