John Glenn

by Sarah from St.Paul

John Herschel Glenn Jr. was born on July 18, 1921, in Ohio. His mom's name was Clara, his sister was named Jean and his dad's name was John Glenn Sr. When John Herschel Glenn Jr. was a young boy, he loved to play with toy model airplanes. He had a big interest in flying.

Many years later, Glenn went to Muskingum College where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering.

Then Pearl Harbor was bombed, bringing America into World War II. Glenn joined the war and became a Marine Aviator. He went on three combat missions, one to the Pacific, one to Korea and one to China.

Later, Glenn became a test pilot at NASA. He worked in the Mercury program. Then he became a Mercury astronaut. He was the third person to go into space. Glenn broke two records: he was the first American to orbit around the Earth in space, and he was the oldest person to go into space.

Glenn decided to take a break from space, so he worked for Royal Crown Cola.

Then he was elected United States Senator from Ohio. As Senator, Glenn tried to decrease the number of nuclear weapons and put an end to wasteful goverment spending.

John Herschel Glenn Jr. started to run for President, but then decided to drop out of the race.
