Jackie Robinson

by Colette Camardello - Middle School - from Prairie View, Minnesota in United States

My hero is Jackie Robinson and he’s my hero because he was the first African American to play baseball with the opposite race, and while he was put in the Brooklyn Dodgers he was criticized and mocked. Before I tell you his story, I picked Jackie because when I played baseball the boys on the other team said I couldn’t hit and that I can't play because I’m a girl. Now to Jackie’s story. Jackie Robinson played for the Brooklyn Dodgers and even his teammates wanted him off the team because of his skin color. In fact some of the team signed a paper and said that they would quit if Jackie didn’t leave the team.

No matter what people said and did, Jackie kept going and after a couple games his teammates started to gain respect, especially one of his teammates that would stand up for him because he wasn’t allowed to fight back. If Jackie fought back he would get kicked off the team and it would be all over the newspapers. Jackie’s favorite base was second. Even at his place to stay, people would throw rocks and bricks at his window as a threat.

In Jackie's career he was hit or got hurt by the opposite team. In fact I will name two times. Once the other team's catcher did his sign to the pitcher, which was right hand thumb in, and that means to throw the ball at the batter on purpose. So the pitcher threw a fastball to Jackie’s head. Another time Jackie was the third baseman and he caught the ball and got the runner out, but the runner purposely stepped on his ankle and the spikes dug into his ankle.

Sadly my hero died in 1972 on October 24. He is a great hero and an even better baseball player.
