Following the LA fires at the beginning of this year, Jennifer Garner shared the heart-breaking news that one of her friends was killed. In response to the devastating loss Garner was quick to action, supporting the community by volunteering with World Central Kitchen (WCK). The non-profit organization, founded in 2010 by Chef José Andrés, provides food relief following disasters. In an interview alongside Chef José for MSNBC, Garner explained,
It is an incredible thing to watch World Central Kitchen and Chef José come in and just, “We’ve got his handled, don’t worry, we’ve got you.” […] The first thing you have to do is feed the people who are caring for the communities and that’s what World Central Kitchen does. You’re never going wrong if you donate to World Central Kitchen.[1]
Whilst Garner did not lose her home, most of her community was lost, including the local Methodist Church. “My heart bleeds for my friends,” she told MSNBC, “I can think of a hundred families, and there are five thousand homes lost.” Her immediate response to the disaster? “What can I do? How can I help? What can I offer?”[2]
As well as WCK, Garner worked closely with Save the Children, whom she has been an ambassador for for more than fifteen years, to support children affected by the wildfires. “When disaster strikes,” she explained, “[Save the Children] show up with trauma-informed care for these kids.”[3] Providing emotional support to children whose lives have been impacted by disaster, Garner argues, is imperative.
We just have to try to slow it down and also emotionally support the kids who lost their school, their home, their church, their playground… We’ve got to really do some social emotional support.[4]
In a time of great personal loss, Jennifer Garner has been at the heart of her community working to support and care for those around her. She is a true inspiration and a wonderful humanitarian hero.
