J.K. Rowling is famous for her creation of the Harry Potter series. The Harry Potter books went on to be the best selling book series of all time. Rowling grew  up in Gloucestershire, England and currently resides in Edinburgh, Scotland with her husband and two kids. In addition to writing the Harry Potter series she has also written several books for adults and helped write the Harry Potter movies. In 2001 for her contribution to literature and her charity work she was awarded the "Order of the British Empire" by the Queen.

Rowling left home for Exeter University when she was 18 and she read so much that she had pay a £50 fine for overdue books. Seven years after she  graduated college she  moved to Scotland where she lived alone and was jobless. During this time she started to write the first Harry Potter book (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone). 

After Rowling wrote the first Harry Potter book she took it to nine different publishers - eight of them rejected it but finally one published it. That book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, became a children's literature classic. She wrote six more that became a huge hit and sold hundreds and millions of copies. After finishing the Harry Potter books Rowling has spent time and money on charities that help children. Through her work she has inspired many kids to follow in her footsteps.
